A Location column stores a place as a latitude and longitude. A location can also carry a label and an address.

When to use it#

Use a Location for anything that has a place: a Site, a Delivery Stop, an Asset, or a reading taken in the field.

A map view needs a Location column. Filters on a Location column can keep records within a radius of a point or inside an area of the map. That is also how a base view can limit a team to its own region.

If people only ever read an address and never need it on a map, a Text column is enough. As soon as someone needs to see records on a map or filter by distance, use a Location.

Enter a location#

In a table, type the coordinates as latitude and longitude separated by a comma, for example 48.13715, 11.57612.

Settings#

SettingWhat it does
Coordinate formatHow coordinates are shown when a location has no label: Decimal degrees or Degrees / minutes / seconds.
Default latitude and Default longitudeWhere the map picker starts.
Default zoom (1–20)How far the map picker is zoomed in when it opens.

The default position and zoom are under Show advanced options when you create the column, and in Edit property afterwards.

Tips#

  • Set the default position to your main operating area, so people don't have to scroll across the world to place a pin.
  • Workflows can build locations and measure distances between them.
  • Location columns can't be used in a Formula, can't be duplicated, and can't be added to time series tables.
