A Number column stores a number. Its format decides how the number is shown and edited, so the same column type covers plain quantities, money, percentages, durations, and star ratings.

When to use it#

Use Number for anything you count, measure, or add up: Quantity, Unit Price, Hours Worked, Discount, or Customer Rating.

Pick a different type when the number comes from somewhere else:

  • Calculated from other columns on the same record, such as quantity times price: use a Formula.
  • A sum, count, or average of linked records, such as an order total: use a Rollup.
  • Written when a record is saved, based on a wider calculation: use a computation rule.
  • A code that only looks like a number, such as a postcode or phone number: use Text or Phone.

Number Format#

FormatShows the number as
DefaultA plain number.
DecimalA number with decimal places.
CurrencyAn amount of money in the currency you choose.
PercentageA percentage. Values are stored from 0 to 100 and shown with a % sign.
DurationA length of time, in the unit and style you choose.
Rating (stars)A row of stars.
ScientificScientific notation, for very large or very small values.

Settings#

Which settings appear depends on the format.

Tips#

  • Put the unit in the column name or the format, such as "Amount" with the Currency format in EUR, or "Time Spent" with the Duration format in hours.
  • One Number column has one currency. If each record can be in a different currency, add a Single Select that uses the Currency codes (ISO 4217) standard list next to a Number column for the amount.
  • Decide on decimal places early when you work with money or measurements, so totals and reports line up.
  • A Number column can be converted to Text. See Change a column's type.
