A Rich Text column stores formatted writing on each record: headings, lists, links, and, if you allow them, images, embeds, code blocks, and tables. It stays a field of the record, next to its other columns.
When to use it#
Use Rich Text for a Description, Internal Notes, or Meeting Notes that need more than plain text.
Pick a different type when:
- The text is short and plain, and people need to filter or sort by it: use Text.
- The writing is a full document with its own title, icon, and cover: use a Page column.
- The document belongs to the whole team rather than one record: use a sidebar page.
Settings#
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dedicated Panel in Entry View | Shows the field as its own panel on the record page, instead of inside the form. |
| Enable Images | Lets people insert images. On by default. |
| Enable Embeds | Lets people embed outside content such as videos. |
| Enable Code Blocks | Lets people insert code blocks. On by default. |
| Enable Tables | Lets people create tables inside the text. On by default. |
| Maximum Length (characters) | The most characters of text the field can hold. |
Everything except the panel setting is under Show advanced options when you create the column, and in Edit property afterwards.
Tips#
- Name the field for its purpose, such as "Internal Notes" or "Product Description".
- Turn on Dedicated Panel in Entry View for long content. The panel gives writers room, and keeps the form short.
- Leave images and embeds on unless the content must stay plain.
- Rich Text columns can't be duplicated or converted to another type, and can't be added to time series tables.
