# Widgets

> Widgets are the tiles on a dashboard. Compare the Chart, KPI and Table widgets and learn how each one reads data from a view.

A widget is one tile on a [dashboard](/docs/dashboards). Each widget has a title, a type, and a position on the dashboard's 12-column grid.

## Widget types

| Widget | What it shows | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Chart](/docs/widgets/chart) | A bar, line, area, pie or donut chart | Trends over time, comparisons between categories, shares of a whole |
| [KPI](/docs/widgets/kpi) | One number | Open jobs, revenue this month, average rating |
| [Table](/docs/widgets/table-summary) | A short list of rows | The next ten deliveries, overdue invoices, low stock |

## Every widget reads a view

When you add a widget, you pick a **Data Source**: one of your [views](/docs/views). The widget only works with the rows that view returns.

This means the view's [access filter](/docs/base-views) and access rules still apply. A widget never counts or shows rows that the person could not see in the view itself.

Charts and KPIs can add their own **Filters** on top of the view, for example "status is not done". That filter defines what the number means. It is not a security boundary.

> **Tip:** Put access on the view, not on the widget. If people should only count their own rows, point the widget at a view whose access filter already limits rows that way.

## Add a widget

1. Open the dashboard and choose **Add Widget**.
2. Enter a widget title.
3. Under **Widget Type**, choose **Chart**, **KPI** or **Table**.
4. Under **Data Source**, select a view.
5. Configure the widget and check the **Live Preview**.
6. Choose **Create**.

To change a widget later, open its menu and choose **Edit**.

## Plan your widgets

For each widget, write down:

- the question it answers, for example "Revenue by month",
- the widget type,
- the view it reads from,
- what it calculates or which columns it shows.

## Widget pages

  - [Chart](/docs/widgets/chart): Bar, line, area, pie and donut charts.
  - [KPI](/docs/widgets/kpi): A single number with a prefix or suffix.
