# Calendar view

> A calendar view places records on dates by month, week, day, or resource. Learn how to set the date fields, colors, and scheduling lanes.

A calendar view places each record on a date. Use it for anything you plan in time: appointments, deliveries, shifts, site visits, deadlines. With a resource field, the calendar becomes a scheduling board with one lane per room, person, or vehicle.

## What a calendar needs

- A **Start Date Field**: a [Date column](/docs/columns/date), or the record's created or last-modified date. This is required.
- A **Title Field**: what each event is called. This can be a Text, ID, Single Select, Status, or Number column. This is required.
- An **End Date Field** if the work takes longer than a moment. With an end date, each event spans a range.

Pick a date column whose precision fits the work: a date-only column for a whole day on the month grid, a date and time for an appointment in the week view.

## Create a calendar view

1. In the sidebar, hover over a folder and click **+**, then choose **New view**.
2. Enter a **Name** and pick **Calendar View** as the **View Type**.
3. In **Calendar Configuration**, choose the **Start Date Field** and the **Title Field**.
4. Optionally choose an **End Date Field**, a **Subtitle Field**, a **Color Field**, and a **Default View Mode**.
5. Under **Parent Data View**, pick the [access filter](/docs/base-views) the calendar reads from.
6. Click **Create**.

To change these settings later, open **Settings** and choose **General**.

## Calendar settings

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Start Date Field** | Where each event starts. Required. |
| **End Date Field** | Where each event ends. Choose **No end date (single-day events)** to leave it out. |
| **Title Field** | The event's name. Required. |
| **Subtitle Field** | An optional second line on each event. |
| **Color Field** | Colors events by a Single Select or Status column, so each option has its own color. |
| **Default View Mode** | Which mode the calendar opens in: **Month**, **Week**, **Day**, or **Resource (Scheduling)**. |
| **Swimlane / Resource Field** | Splits the calendar into one lane per value. See [Resource scheduling](#resource-scheduling). |
| **Swimlane Height (px)** | How tall each lane is. |
| **Start Time**, **End Time** | The hours shown in the week and day views. |
| **Slot Duration** | The size of each time slot in the week and day views: 15, 30, or 60 minutes. |
| **Show weekends** | Shows or hides Saturday and Sunday. |
| **Show empty swimlanes** | Shows lanes that have no events in the visible range. |
| **Show event time** | Shows the time on each event. |

## Resource scheduling

Choose a **Swimlane / Resource Field** and switch to **Resource** to see one lane per value: a bay, a technician, a vehicle. This lets you plan "this bay, this technician" without a separate table. The field can be a Status, Single Select, Multi Select, Text, Person, Relation, or ID column.

## Work in the calendar

- **Switch modes.** Use **Month**, **Week**, **Day**, and **Resource** in the calendar's toolbar.
- **Reschedule.** Drag an event to another day. If the event has an end date, the end moves by the same number of days.
- **Reassign.** In resource mode, drag an event to another lane to change its resource field.
- **Open a record.** Click an event to open its [record page](/docs/views/record-page).

Rescheduling is a normal update, so [business rules](/docs/business-rules) still apply. If a rule refuses the change, you see the reason and the record isn't changed.

If you see **Calendar Not Configured**, open **Settings**, choose **General**, and set a start date field and a title field.

  - [Date column](/docs/columns/date): Dates, times, and how precision affects the calendar.
  - [Views](/docs/views): All view types and how permissions apply.
  - [Record page](/docs/views/record-page): What opens when someone clicks an event.
