# Folders

> Folders organize views, pages and dashboards in the sidebar and control who can see them. Learn how to create folders, sections and apps.

A folder is a place in the sidebar. It holds views, pages, dashboards and other folders. A folder is also an access boundary: everything inside it can share the same access rules, so you can hand a whole area to a team in one step.

## The built-in sections

The sidebar has three built-in sections:

- **Workspace** is where the screens people work in live: views, pages, dashboards and folders.
- **Database** lists your tables. It does not hold views or pages. See [Tables](/docs/tables).
- **Private** is yours alone. Items here are hidden from everyone else.

Workflows are not kept in folders. You find them under **Workflows** in the sidebar tabs.

## Create a folder

1. In the sidebar, hover over the section or folder where the new folder should go and choose **+**.
2. Choose **New folder**.
3. Enter a **Folder name**.
4. Choose **Create folder**.

The same **+** menu lets you create a **New page**, **New view** or **New dashboard** directly inside the folder.

## Rename a folder and change its icon

Open the folder's menu in the sidebar and choose **Rename**. You can change the name and pick an icon at the same time. Icons can be an **Emoji**, one of the built-in **Icons**, or an image you **Upload**. You can also choose a color.

## Move items between folders

Drag items in the sidebar to reorder them or move them into another folder. You can also open an item's menu in its header, choose **Move to**, and pick the destination folder.

## Sections and apps

When one part of your business should have its own place in the sidebar, turn its folder into a section. This works well for apps such as Sales, Warehouse or Finance, where each team lives in different screens.

1. Create a folder directly inside **Workspace**, for example `Sales`.
2. Put the views, pages and dashboards for that team inside it.
3. Open the folder's menu and choose **Turn into section**.

The folder now appears as its own section in the sidebar, next to Workspace. To undo this, open the section's menu and choose **Turn back into folder**.

> **Tip:** If only one team uses SAPUGO, nested folders inside Workspace are usually enough. Create a separate section when a team should land in its own place and not see another team's screens.

## Control who can see a folder

Each folder has access rules that say which people, groups or the whole organization may open it. Items inside the folder inherit those rules unless they set their own.

1. Open the folder's menu in the sidebar and choose **Settings**.
2. Under **Permission mode**, choose **Inherit from parent** to use the rules of the folder above and add to them, or **Custom permissions** to use only the rules you set on this folder.
3. Choose **Add ACL** to add a person, group or the whole organization, and pick what they can do.
4. Save your changes.

Putting views in a folder is the easiest way to give a whole area to a group, without repeating the same rules on every view. If one view inside must be tighter or wider than its folder, give that view **Custom permissions**. See [Access](/docs/access).

## Move items to Private

Moving an item into your **Private** section hides it from everyone else. For shared items, this is the same as removing them from the organization, so it requires the **Move to Private** permission. See [Groups](/docs/groups).

## Delete a folder

Open the folder's menu and choose **Delete Folder**. The folder and its contents move to Trash and stay there for 30 days, so you can restore them. If the folder contains items you are not allowed to delete, ask an admin or move those items out first.

## Plan your sidebar

Sketch the sidebar the way your team describes its departments. For each folder or section, write down:

- its name,
- what it contains,
- who can open it,
- whether those people can edit records there.
