# URL

> Use a URL column to store clickable links, such as websites, tracking links, or documents kept outside SAPUGO. Control how links are shown.

A URL column stores a web address and shows it as a clickable link.

## When to use it

Use URL for a Website, a Tracking Link, a Social Profile, or a document that lives in another system.

If people should upload the file itself, use a [Files](/docs/columns/files) column instead.

## Settings

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Display Mode** | How links appear in table cells: **Full URL**, **Hostname Only** (just the domain), or **Path Only**. |
| **Open in New Tab** | Opens links in a new browser tab. Recommended for links to other websites. On by default. |
| **Show Protocol** | Shows the `https://` or `http://` part of the address. |
| **Allowed Protocols** | Limits which kinds of links are accepted, separated by commas, such as `https, http, mailto`. Leave it empty to allow all. |

**Show Protocol** and **Allowed Protocols** are under **Show advanced options** when you create the column, and in **Edit property** afterwards.

## Tips

- Name the column after what the link points to, such as "Tracking Link" or "Supplier Website".
- Set **Allowed Protocols** to `https` when the column must only hold secure web addresses.
- **Hostname Only** keeps long links readable in a busy table.
- A URL column can be converted to Text, and a Text column can be converted to URL. See [Change a column's type](/docs/columns#change-a-columns-type).
