# Single Select

> Use a Single Select column to pick one option from a list you define, such as priority, region, or payment method. Add colors and standard lists.

A Single Select column stores one choice from a list you define. Each option has a label and a color, and shows as a colored tag in your views.

## When to use it

Use Single Select for a category that doesn't move through a lifecycle: Priority, Region, Payment Method, or Customer Type. Everyone picks from the same list, so filters, groups, and charts stay clean.

Pick a different type when:

- The value is a stage with a beginning and an end, such as Draft, In Review, Approved: use [Status](/docs/columns/status). Status knows which stages count as done.
- A record can have several values at once: use [Multi Select](/docs/columns/multi-select).
- Each choice is really a record with its own details, such as a customer or a product: use a [Relation](/docs/columns/relation).
- The choice is a member of your organization: use [Person](/docs/columns/person).

## Settings

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Options** | The choices people can pick from. Give each one a label and a color, and drag them into the order you want. You need at least one option to create the column. |
| **Standard list** | Instead of typing your own options, use **Currency codes (ISO 4217)** or **Countries (ISO 3166)**. The choices come from the standard list and stay up to date. Switch back to **My own options** to edit them. |
| **Allow Other Values** | Lets people enter a value that isn't in the list. |

**Allow Other Values** is under **Show advanced options** when you create the column, and in **Edit property** afterwards.

## Tips

- List every option before you start entering data. Renaming options later is fine, but a clear list from day one keeps reports tidy.
- Leave **Allow Other Values** off unless you really need it. Free-typed values are what make a list drift.
- A Single Select can group a [kanban view](/docs/views/kanban), with one board column per option.
- A Single Select can be converted to Text, Multi Select, or Status. If your list turns out to be a lifecycle, convert it to Status and assign each option its lifecycle stage. See [Change a column's type](/docs/columns#change-a-columns-type).
