# Number

> Use a Number column for quantities, money, percentages, durations, and star ratings. Choose a format, decimal places, and allowed range.

A Number column stores a number. Its format decides how the number is shown and edited, so the same column type covers plain quantities, money, percentages, durations, and star ratings.

## When to use it

Use Number for anything you count, measure, or add up: Quantity, Unit Price, Hours Worked, Discount, or Customer Rating.

Pick a different type when the number comes from somewhere else:

- Calculated from other columns on the same record, such as quantity times price: use a [Formula](/docs/columns/formula).
- A sum, count, or average of linked records, such as an order total: use a [Rollup](/docs/columns/rollup).
- Written when a record is saved, based on a wider calculation: use a [computation rule](/docs/business-rules/computation).
- A code that only looks like a number, such as a postcode or phone number: use [Text](/docs/columns/text) or [Phone](/docs/columns/phone).

## Number Format

| Format | Shows the number as |
| --- | --- |
| **Default** | A plain number. |
| **Decimal** | A number with decimal places. |
| **Currency** | An amount of money in the currency you choose. |
| **Percentage** | A percentage. Values are stored from 0 to 100 and shown with a % sign. |
| **Duration** | A length of time, in the unit and style you choose. |
| **Rating (stars)** | A row of stars. |
| **Scientific** | Scientific notation, for very large or very small values. |

## Settings

Which settings appear depends on the format.

| Setting | Appears for | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Decimal Places** | Default, Decimal, Currency, Percentage, Scientific | How many digits to show after the decimal point, from 0 to 10. |
| **Currency** | Currency | The currency the amounts are in, such as EUR, USD, or GBP. |
| **Unit** | Duration | The unit people type and the value is stored in: Seconds, Minutes, Hours, or Days. |
| **Display format** | Duration | How the duration is shown: Human-readable (1h 30m), Clock (HH:MM:SS), or Decimal (1.5 h). |
| **Maximum stars** | Rating (stars) | The size of the rating scale, from 1 to 10. The default is 5. |
| **Minimum Value** and **Maximum Value** | All formats except Rating | The lowest and highest value people can enter. |

## Tips

- Put the unit in the column name or the format, such as "Amount" with the Currency format in EUR, or "Time Spent" with the Duration format in hours.
- One Number column has one currency. If each record can be in a different currency, add a [Single Select](/docs/columns/single-select) that uses the **Currency codes (ISO 4217)** standard list next to a Number column for the amount.
- Decide on decimal places early when you work with money or measurements, so totals and reports line up.
- A Number column can be converted to Text. See [Change a column's type](/docs/columns#change-a-columns-type).
