# Email

> Use an Email column to store contact email addresses on a record. SAPUGO checks the format and makes each address easy to use.

An Email column stores an email address and treats it as one. SAPUGO checks that each value looks like a real address, for example `andrew@example.com`, instead of accepting any text.

## When to use it

Use Email for a contact address on a record: Billing Email, Site Contact, or Supplier Email.

Pick a different type when:

- The person is a member of your organization: use [Person](/docs/columns/person). Their profile already has their address.
- The contact is a full record with a phone number, a company, and a history: keep contacts in their own table and link to them with a [Relation](/docs/columns/relation).

## Settings

An Email column has no type-specific settings. You can still make it required or unique under **Show advanced options**.

## Tips

- Name the column after whose address it is, such as "Billing Email" rather than "Email".
- An Email column stores the address. Sending messages is done by a [workflow](/docs/workflows), which can read the address from this column.
- Turn on **Unique Values** when no two records should share an address, such as a customer list.
- An Email column can be converted to Text, and a Text column can be converted to Email. See [Change a column's type](/docs/columns#change-a-columns-type).
