# Checkbox

> Use a Checkbox column for facts that are either true or false, such as Billable, Urgent, or Signature Received.

A Checkbox column stores yes or no. A record is either checked or unchecked.

## When to use it

Use a Checkbox for a single fact that is true or false: Billable, Urgent, Requires Signature, or Safety Check Completed.

Pick a different type when there are more than two answers:

- A set of named stages, such as Draft, Sent, and Paid: use [Status](/docs/columns/status).
- One of several categories: use [Single Select](/docs/columns/single-select).
- Several tags at once: use [Multi Select](/docs/columns/multi-select).

## Settings

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Default value** | When turned on, new records start checked. |

## Tips

- Name the column so that "checked" has one obvious meaning. "Safety check completed" is clearer than "Safety".
- If you find yourself adding a second checkbox to describe the same thing ("Started", "Finished"), switch to a [Status](/docs/columns/status) column.
- In a [formula](/docs/columns/formula), a Checkbox is read as a Boolean value, so you can use it directly as the condition in `IF`.
- A Checkbox can be converted to Text. When you convert Text to Checkbox, you can choose to set any value that can't be read as yes or no to unchecked.
