# Created and modified columns

> Show who created or last changed a record, and when, with Created At, Last Modified At, Created By, and Last Modified By columns.

SAPUGO records who created each record and who changed it last, and when. These four column types let you show that history in your views. You'll find them in the **System** category of the type picker.

| Column type | What it shows |
| --- | --- |
| **Created At** | When the record was created. |
| **Last Modified At** | When the record was last changed. |
| **Created By** | The member who created the record. |
| **Last Modified By** | The member who last changed the record. |

SAPUGO fills these in automatically. Nobody can type or change their values.

## When to use them

Every record keeps this history even without these columns. Add one when you want to see or use the value in a view: to sort by newest, filter on "created this week", show who last changed a record, or chart records created per month.

A business moment such as "Approved At" or "Shipped At" is different from when someone last edited the record. Use a [Date](/docs/columns/date) column for it, and let a [computation rule](/docs/business-rules/computation) or a [workflow](/docs/workflows) fill it in at that moment.

## Settings

- **Created At** and **Last Modified At** have the same display settings as a [Date](/docs/columns/date) column, such as **Date Precision**, **Display Format**, and **Locale**.
- **Created By** and **Last Modified By** have **Filter by Groups**, like a [Person](/docs/columns/person) column.

## Tips

- Add **Created At** to any list that people want to sort from newest to oldest.
- Use a separate Date column whenever the business event and the edit can happen at different times. Editing a typo would otherwise move your "approved" date.
